Friends of Sierra Rock Art -Tahoe National Forest
Archaeological Site Monitoring Program

The Friends of Sierra Rock Art (FSRA) and the Tahoe National Forest (TNF) sponsor and conduct an Archaeological Site Monitor Program. The program focuses on prehistoric sites and primarily those with rock art features.

The objective of the Monitoring Program is to work closely with landowner / Agency Archaeologists- following their policies- to provide ongoing survey to assess changes and disturbances at sites. Another aim is to provide a presence at sites. When appropriate, recommendations are made concerning conservation and preservation measures.

This program has been successful in monitoring sites, documenting vandalism, adding new features to existing site records, documenting "new" sites and helping implement strategies to better protect sites. The program focuses on prehistoric sites and primarily those with rock art features. This program is an example of how Rock Art Advocacy groups can work effectively in conjunction with Land Management agencies to protect and conserve cultural resources in their local area.
