The dark circle on the left end of the photo is a natural intrusion - an area of dark rock that is intruding through the lighter colored surface rock. The prehistoric petroglyph maker attached two "squiggly" designs to the intrusion to create an image. Designs made with natural intrusions are found at other high Sierra sites as well.
